Students are constantly struggling with the tuition dilemma facing so many others around the nation and around the world. Scholarships and grants are great, but too often these options do not add up to the funds required to attend a college or university. Many students are now turning to part-time jobs and college internships as a way to pay their bills and earn their degree.

Students should not waste too much time worrying themselves over their college tuition bills, as this often takes away from the time they have to study and get good grades in college. When students discover financial freedom for the first time, they often feel a sense of relief that they do not have to stay up nights wondering how their college tuition bills are going to get paid. Being able to pay for classes, books and other expenses students carry (rent, utilities, food, etc.) can be a huge load off and allow the student to refocus their attention to their studies and classes. This usually translates into a dramatic rise in grade point average and an overall positive college experience.

When students cease to be afraid of college tuition, they have won a huge battle that is still raging with so many of their peers. Scholarships are so competitive and grants can be hard to come by for many students, so students are then forced to find new ways of paying their bills. Many turn to a job, but with a nine to five job, students often feel pressured more than they should. A part-time job or a college internship may allow the student to maintain a flexible enough schedule to still go to classes and get their work done, but at the same time earn money for college. It is usually a win-win situation, as the financial freedom relieves a great deal of stress and the experience they get will benefit them while they are in school and after graduation.

Having experience when going on job interviews is a huge plus for students who otherwise would not have much to talk about. Being able to sell themselves as qualified candidates for jobs after college, students will usually find the job market less intimidating and daunting. Being able to confidently approach an interviewer and explain to them why they are the best applicant for the job, students will come off as strong and very capable of handling anything that is thrown their way. Employers love to see leadership and initiative and having an internship often helps to show both.

Beyond paying for college tuition bills, students with internships often are given the chance to develop their leadership abilities. Leadership is one of the most important skills a student can learn while in college. All interviewers look for examples of leadership in their applicants and having an internship allows the student to demonstrate how they were given the opportunity to lead. Having an internship also shows initiative, as it demonstrates how the student went out and found an internship so that they could make enough money to earn their degree and get some experience at the same time.

Students often wonder whether it is worth seeking an internship while still in college, as most students believe that they cannot handle the rigors of school combined with the responsibilities a part-time job will bring. These students often miss out, however, on a very valuable opportunity to expand their horizons and meet new people. And an internship usually will not interfere with schoolwork, studying and reading assignments college students are bothered with every semester.

With a college internship under their belt, students are able to see the world in a way they may have never seen it before. They will have gone through a little bit of an introduction to the real world and the challenges it may hold for them as they embark on the beginning of their career. Expanding their horizons through a college internship, students are able to meet new people and expose themselves to new ideas they may have never considered in the past. Being able to expand their ways of thinking and consider different ways of doing business, students become more well-rounded, something that many employers are looking for in their applicants and potential new employees.

A world of experience and knowledge now at their disposal, students who have gone through a college internship program are often much better prepared for the real world than their peers who may not have taken advantage of the opportunity. Employers will often notice that a student is better prepared when he or she has had some experience working in the real world, outside the usual classroom setting that students limit themselves to. Professors may try to recreate real world scenarios, situations and scenes, but when it is done in the confines of a classroom, or in a classroom setting, it is not the same. Getting out and finding a new understanding of the world is important for college students.

This will allow them to see the way the world works and what challenges it may have in store for them once they graduate college. Graduation is a fun time for many students and their families, as it is a time to reflect and celebrate their accomplishments. It can also be a scary, uncertain time. Looking back and wondering if they prepared themselves enough is never a fun situation to find themselves in. When a student has a college internship behind them, they can enter the job market with a little more confidence and self-assurance. They will know that they possess the proper skills and experience to impress interviewers and succeed in their new job.

So when it comes time to decide whether a college internship is the right move, consider the value it holds and what it can do for a student’s confidence and leadership ability. Entering a job interview with these qualities will put the student at an advantage. And it does not cut into study time as much as many students believe. It can actually be a bit refreshing to get out of the dorm and off campus for a few hours a week.

Since you’re just graduating from college, and are probably looking for a job you might consider a public sector job like a teaching job. Particularly now that the Teach for America program is at full swing or maybe you would be interested in taking a job at the World Bank that gives networking opportunities although the pay is very low. Or perhaps you might consider a job with one of the government agencies like FEMA or the CIA or even the Treasury Department.

Of course, the quest for a job in today’s weak economy has many college grads stressing out. If this is your year to graduate from college you might instead be worried about what your future holds. In the outlook for tomorrow, the next couple of jobs are supposed to be in the top 10 for today’s college grad.

If you are one of the many graduates who just are not sure how to get started on the right career path, your college or university will usually have a career office that can help you plan for the future. You will also find outside companies that specialize in helping college student’s plan their school and career so that they are able get the job they want. They also help the college grad who continues onto further class work in graduate school. The help that is available better enables the student to see what careers might be available in their particular field of study or major. By starting the process early many students are able to save time and money by identifying the career path that is right for them without costly trial and error.

The process for possible career identification is to locate companies that have the same interests as the student and is in a city that is close to where they want to live and work. If there is a specific major the student wants to find jobs that will coincide with that specific industry or if there are certain work or certificate requirements for the student or firm they want to work for the student needs to take these into consideration.

Other great tools to help the college grad find a job are the career fair and the online resume. The job-fairs will be hosted by companies that are looking and recruiting to hire qualified students for positions in their companies. The job-fairs are held on campus at the various colleges and universities but are also hosted online via the internet.
